Trauma, Stress and Depression

#BlogaFlaniWrites
Work trauma. Work stress. Work depression. I trust y’all have already seen the DJ Lithium story. He committed suicide while at Capital FM. He was at work. In the office. He took rat poison. And before he could get help he was dead.

The 34 year old had earlier deleted all his social media accounts. We didn’t get it. The office didn’t. A big office like Capital FM didn’t. He even left behind a suicide note. Busy working environments in Nairobi are toxic. I had to quit one earlier in my career. Had to. Because I had no time off. Despite the two day a week off, I was never really off work. I was always on my toes.

Thinking about the next news article. Who to call. Which political figure would give me a story.

KPIs. I was always at work even while playing football. I quit. Busy work environments don’t have a system where you can express yourself. Where you can take a break. The HR was initially supposed to handle the well being of workers but these days they’re monster’s.

They don’t give a Fuck. You’ll be fired for the smallest of mistakes. They’ll threaten you with unemployment data. I used to freak out at those sentiments. I remember only sleeping 3 hours a day. This is the case with many of us who are working in offices hapa Nairobi.

We don’t have a support system. Nothing. We’re just zombies who will wake up one day and throw ourselves from I&M building.
